5 Tortoiseshell Cats Traits You Did Not Know About
Tortoiseshell cats - or torties - as some people endearingly love to call them, are beautiful, loving and also cunning creatures. Anyone who is a parent to tortie would probably confirm this. Are all torties the same? No! But they do have some features that people who are parents to torties say they have in common. These features are what usually makes them so special and the reason we love them so much.
Here are 5 things you might want to know about them to help you understand them better!
1. Jealousy
Tortie cats are very loving, this comes hand in hand with the fact they usually pick one person to whom they keep very special feelings - their all time favorite person. When they pick you as their favorite, you will probably be very flattered by it. But this also comes with the famous tortie jealousy. They not only see you as their favorite person, they also genuinely get very hurt when they see you cuddling with other cats. This is why even some vets say torties are the best cats to be an only cat in the household. If you have a tortie and also other cats, be very sure to give them extra attention and love, especially if you see them keeping their distance or if you see them watching from distance while you cuddle other cat.
When tortoiseshell cats want to cuddle you, they will wait for a moment when you are all alone. They want you all for themselves during your special cuddle time. It is very rare to see a tortie cat come sit in your lap when another cat is already there - this also comes with their territorial.
2. Mischiefious
Right now we have 5 cats in total in our household. Guess which one makes the most mess? Jumps the places no other cat ever thought of jumping? Bites the stuff no one other cat ever thought of biting? Opens the counters? Picks up ball of hair from water drain in shower? And many many more? You guessed it. Tortie cats might make you cat proof your whole household. Forget about leaving your jewelry, wet food satchels or toilet paper in sight. Your tortie will definitely think of playing with these or - in the case of the wet food - bite their way through the package and eat it. This is not only frustrating, it is also dangerous to your cat! You have to be very careful with these things with ANY cat, but from our experience, the tortie cats require more caution.
3. Territorial
Some owners say it was very difficult to get their tortie to get used to a new cat in household. Torties love their personal space so they are not too happy when a new cat, who could take from their space, is brought home by their parents.
This is why it is important with torties to catify your household as much as possible, especially add many different places where they can snooze. For torties it is especially beneficial to add high cat trees or, even better, cat shelves where your tortie can be completely alone when she feels like it!

4. Talkative
Do you just adore when your cat talks to you with their cute little meowy voice? Then you should probably consider getting a tortoiseshell cat. I will be repeating myself but from the five cats we have, our tortie definitely confirms this theory. Torties do like their space, but once they realize they would like some attention, they have their ways and means.
When your tortie talks to you, you must talk back - they love it!
5. Energetic
Torties love a good play! While they will find a way to play alone if they have their toys, it is crucial to play with your cat. Any cat, no matter the color. Although cat parents do report their tortie cat almost never gets tired and is always down to play. This is why it might be good idea to leash train your tortie or maybe even get them a cat wheel. Although not very cheap, tortie cats love them!
Due to their hyper personality, some vets believe tortie cats are better to be both indoor and outdoor cats.
